Good cable management is the difference between a patch cabinet that stays workable for years and a tangle nobody dares to touch. We route every patch cable through horizontal and vertical cable managers, bundle them per patch panel and keep the runs short and logical. Every cable gets a fixed length so no loops are left over, and everything is labelled at both ends. The result is a tidy patch cabinet where you can see at a glance which port goes where, and where you can swap a cable without puzzling.

How do you lay out a patch cabinet?
A well-considered layout determines how pleasant a cabinet is to work with day to day. We use a fixed structure that has proven itself in practice:
- Patch panels at the top. The patch panels and switches go at the top, so the cabling runs logically from top to bottom and stays easy to reach.
- Plan the U heights. We plan the U heights in advance and keep space free for cable managers and future equipment.
- Power supply (PDU at the bottom). We put the PDU at the bottom of the cabinet, separated from the data cables, for safe and clearly arranged power distribution.
- Ventilation and cooling. Enough ventilation and, where needed, active cooling keep the equipment at temperature and extend its life.
- Labelling and network diagram. Consistent labelling at both ends and an up-to-date network diagram make management and troubleshooting fast and error-free.
- Around 30% room to grow. We leave roughly 30% of the space and ports free, so you can expand later without rebuilding the whole cabinet.

Naming and labelling: find any point at a glance
A label is only useful if it means the same thing everywhere. We use a fixed naming convention based on zone, floor and connection point number. That name appears on the wall outlet, on the patch panel and in the cable plan, three places that match one to one. Already working with your own convention as an MSP? Then we adopt it. A second system alongside yours helps nobody.
The panel layout follows the same logic. Depending on the building we organise per floor, per zone or per room, so a fault report points straight at the right row of panels. That way your team can get going on day one without first working out how the cabinet is put together.

Which cabinet suits the space?
Not every situation calls for a floor-standing rack. For a small office a 19-inch wall cabinet is often enough. As the port count grows, a floor-standing rack or an open frame makes more sense. We advise based on the space, the number of connection points and what you will need a few years from now. We do not supply the cabinet itself: you or your supplier buy it, we mount the panels and set it up.
Server rooms have extra rules. We take hot and cold aisle separation into account, cable management above and below the floor, and labelling that lines up with your DCIM or management software. We rebuild an existing cabinet step by step: first survey which connections are still active, then a new cable plan, then repatch without taking the network down.
