Network cabling for offices: how many data points do you need?

Cabling an office is mostly a calculation up front and tidy work afterwards. How many points per workstation, where the access points go, and how you keep the disruption down while people carry on working. This is how we handle it.

Data points per workstation

A common guideline is two data points per workstation. That sounds like a lot for one laptop, but it leaves room for a docking station, an IP phone or a second screen without a stray switch ending up under the desk. On top of that you count points for access points, roughly one per 100 to 150 m², plus points for IP cameras and any VoIP handsets. We survey on site and advise based on how the space is actually used, not on a standard number.

Finish in an office environment

Office cabling is judged on what you can see. We tuck data points into partition walls, columns and suspended ceilings, so no cable tray runs across a meeting room. We supply wall outlets in the colour that suits the interior: white, grey or a RAL colour. For access points we pull PoE-ready Cat6A to the ceiling point, so the cable is never the limiting factor when a faster access point goes up later.

Working in a building that keeps running

In an office that is in use we plan per floor or per zone, so a whole floor is never off the network at once. Where disruption really does not work, we work evenings or weekends by arrangement. In let office buildings, multi-tenant premises and shared spaces we agree the routing and the working hours with the building manager before we start.

Extending what is already there

Not every office project starts from scratch. If you want an extra floor or a handful of extra points, we connect to the existing patch cabinet and adopt the naming convention that is already in use. We first survey what is there and how much of it is still usable. Every new link gets a test report and goes into the updated cable plan, so you end up with one document instead of two.
