Data cabling for solar panels, batteries and BESS

Solar panels and batteries only deliver value once you can read them out and control them. That data travels over a wired path, from the inverter or battery system to a data logger, gateway or energy management system. SIGNAALMAKERS installs that data path: RS485, Modbus and Ethernet in Cat6A and Cat7, functionally tested and delivered with a cable plan.

We only do the data. Other parties install the panels and batteries.

An inverter tells the story of the yield and the state of the system, but only if that data can go somewhere. A battery system monitors every cell and calculates the state of charge. Without a reliable communication path that information stays stuck and the system performs below its potential. The data path is the final piece, and it is cabling work.

Why now

The battery market is growing fast and the power grid is filling up. Grid operators may curtail feed-in in congested areas, and more and more solar parks and businesses actively control their generation and storage to absorb grid peaks. All that control runs on data. Anyone who wants to read out and control needs a reliable data path.

What we install

SIGNAALMAKERS handles the data side of an energy installation. We only do the data.

RS485 cabling

Between inverters, data loggers and the metering cabinet, including daisy-chaining and terminating the bus correctly with an end resistor.

Modbus connection

Over RS485 or Ethernet, so the inverter, battery and EMS speak the same language.

Ethernet data cabling

Cat6, Cat6A and Cat7 for Modbus TCP and monitoring. Cat7 is double shielded, ideal in the interference-heavy environment of inverters and batteries.

Patch cabinet and connection point

Neatly arranged and labelled, ready for management.

We do not install panels or batteries and we do not lay fibre. Our role is the data path that makes the installation readable and controllable. Connect the network to our network cabling with Cat6A and Cat7.

At park and business level we install the data cabling up to the EMS connection point.

How it works

How the data path is built

The data from solar panels and batteries is read out via data cabling. This is how we build it up.

The data path starts at the communication port of the inverter or battery system: the RS485 port (GND, A and B) or the Ethernet port.

With multiple devices we daisy-chain them. One device is the leader, the rest followers, each with its own Modbus address. The chain is terminated with an end resistor.

The cable runs to a data logger, gateway or metering point. We use shielded, twisted cable and for Ethernet Cat7 or Cat6A.

From the data logger the cabling runs to the connection point where the monitoring, the EMS or the management platform collects the data.

The entire route is functionally tested and labelled, and delivered with a cable plan.

We install this complete data path. The panels, batteries and the EMS itself are installed and configured by other parties.

Every route is functionally tested and delivered with a cable plan. The other party or MSP therefore knows exactly what is where and can continue straight away with configuration and management. That is the way SIGNAALMAKERS works: the physical installation is right, so management runs smoothly.

Data cabling for reading out solar panels, inverters and batteries

We install the data cabling that gets reliable data from solar panels, inverters, batteries and energy storage (BESS) into your monitoring or energy management system (EMS).

RS485 and Modbus cabling

We install the RS485 cabling and the Modbus connection between inverters, batteries, data loggers and the metering cabinet. RS485 cable is installed as shielded twisted pair, daisy-chained and correctly terminated with an end resistor, with its own Modbus address per device. That way you read out the inverter and the battery system reliably.

Ethernet cabling to inverters and BESS

For Modbus TCP and monitoring we install Ethernet cabling to the inverters and the battery system in Cat6, Cat6A and Cat7. Cat6A and Cat7 are shielded and therefore suitable for the interference-heavy environment around inverters and energy storage, so the monitoring and readout cabling stays stable.

Which cabling do you need to read out solar panels and inverters?

RS485 is a robust, interference-resistant data bus over a shielded twisted pair; Modbus is the protocol that runs over it. Together they are the standard for reading out and controlling inverters, batteries and meters. With multiple devices you build an RS485 chain with an end resistor and a separate Modbus address per device.

How do you connect a battery system (BESS) to monitoring?

A battery system or BESS communicates via its BMS, usually over Modbus TCP (Ethernet) or CAN bus. We install the battery monitoring cabling between the battery system, the inverter and the EMS, so state of charge, health and power stay readable and controllable.

Can I read out my energy storage remotely?

Yes. With the right cabling for energy storage, the data from the inverter or battery system runs via a data logger or gateway to the monitoring or energy management system. That way you read out your generation and storage locally or remotely. We install the complete data path up to the connection point.
